Babrak Karmal was born in Kabul Province, Afghanistan on March 19, 1929. He was a prominent Afghan politician who served as the leader of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) from 1979 to 1986 and as the President of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1987. He was a Soviet-aligned Marxist-Leninist who played a key role in the Saur Revolution, which overthrew the Afghan monarchy in 1978.
