Babrak Karmal died on 1 or 3 December 1996. He was the leader of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1986, during the Soviet-Afghan War. He was a member of the Parcham faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. Karmal was a Soviet-trained communist who had spent many years in exile in the Soviet Union. He returned to Afghanistan in 1978 and became the head of state after the Saur Revolution.
