Baybars was a Mamluk sultan who ruled Egypt and Syria from 1260 to 1277. He was a successful military commander who defeated the Mongols at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, and he also conquered the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1268. Baybars died in 1277, and he was succeeded by his son Al-Salih Ayyub.
