Bảo Đại was the last emperor of Vietnam. He ruled from 1926 to 1945, when the French were defeated in World War II and Japan took over Vietnam. Bảo Đại remained emperor under the Japanese occupation, but his power was limited. After the war, the Vietnamese nationalist movement Viet Minh defeated the French in the First Indochina War and established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
