Bảo Đại was ousted in 1955, when he was deposed by the military government of Ngô Đình Diệm. Diệm had become the Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam in 1954, and he had quickly consolidated his power and eliminated his rivals. In 1955, he held a referendum on whether Vietnam should become a republic, and he won with a landslide victory.
