Bảo Đại died on 31 July 1997 at the age of 83. He was the last emperor of Vietnam, reigning from 1926 to 1945. After the end of World War II, he was forced to abdicate and Vietnam became a republic. Bảo Đại lived in exile for most of his life, first in China and then in France. He died in Paris of a heart attack.
