Bảo Đại was born on 22 October 1913 in Hue, the capital of Annam, which was then a French protectorate. He was the only son of Emperor Khai Dinh and Empress Nam Phương, and he became emperor in 1925 at the age of 12. Bảo Đại ruled Vietnam until 1945, when he was deposed by the Viet Minh. He lived in exile in France until his death in 1997.
