Bảo Đại renamed his country to the Empire of Vietnam in 1945. This name was chosen in an effort to restore the country to its former glory and to reclaim its status as an independent nation. However, the Empire of Vietnam did not last long, and it was replaced by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1946.
