Bảo Đại was the last emperor of Vietnam, ruling from 1926 to 1945. During his reign, he ruled over the territories of Tonkin and Annam. These territories were part of the French colonial empire, and Bảo Đại was the de jure monarch of these territories. He was not, however, the de facto ruler, as the French colonial government held real power.
