Bảo Đại was the Emperor of Vietnam from 1926 to 1945, and again from 1949 to 1955. During his first reign, he ruled as a protectorate Emperor under French rule, while during his second reign, he ruled as a figurehead under the French-backed State of Vietnam. After the Viet Minh took over Vietnam in 1954, Bảo Đại abdicated and went into exile in France.
