Bartolomé de las Casas was born in 1484 in Seville, Spain. He was a Dominican friar, historian, and priest who was one of the most important advocates for the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. He wrote extensively about the abuses committed against the indigenous peoples by the Spanish colonists, and he called for an end to the encomienda system, which allowed Spanish colonists to enslave indigenous peoples.
