The city of Bhavnagar was founded by Bhavsinhji Gohil, the youngest son of Raja Gohil of Piram Island, in 1724. Bhavsinhji established the Gohil dynasty, which ruled Bhavnagar until 1948 when the state merged with the Union of India. The city is named after its founder and quickly became an important trading center and port on the west coast of India.
