William Anders was an American astronaut, test pilot, and naval officer. He served as the Command Module Pilot on Apollo 8, the first manned mission to orbit the Moon. Anders was also the backup Command Module Pilot for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing. He was later appointed as NASA's Chief of the Astronaut Office, and served in that position from 1970 to 1972.
