Boris III was the eldest son of Ferdinand I, the first Tsar of Bulgaria. Boris was born in Sofia in 1894 and ascended to the throne in 1918 after the death of his father. He ruled Bulgaria during a period of political and economic instability, and his reign was marked by several assassination attempts. Boris died in 1943 under mysterious circumstances and was succeeded by his son, Simeon II.
