Lyatoshynsky studied folk music in Tajikistan. He was sent there by the government of the Soviet Union to study the music of the country's ethnic minorities. He spent several years in Tajikistan, and during that time he collected and studied a large number of folk songs. He also wrote a number of compositions based on the music he heard in Tajikistan.
