James M. Ruxton was a Canadian physician who committed at least three murders in the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the 1860s. He was never convicted of these crimes, but was tried and acquitted of one murder in 1867. After his death in 1870, Ruxton's story was fictionalized in several novels and films.
