Rabbani was the Head of the Afghan National Front. The Afghan National Front was an alliance of Afghan mujahideen groups formed in June 1985 to oppose the Soviet-backed Afghan government. It was composed of a wide variety of groups, including both secular and Islamist factions. The Front was led by Rabbani, who was also the President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996.
