Rabbani worked as a professor at Kabul University. He taught political science and was known for his opposition to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. He was also a member of the Afghan Mujahideen, a group of Afghan fighters who opposed the Soviet occupation. Rabbani served as president of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996. He was assassinated in 2011 by a suicide bomber.
