Burhanuddin Rabbani was the political head of the Northern Alliance, a coalition of Afghani mujahideen who fought against the Taliban. Rabbani was a moderate Islamic cleric who was opposed to the Taliban's strict interpretation of Islam. He was also a member of the Jamiat-e Islami political party.
