Roland Burris was born in Centralia, Illinois on January 30, 1937. He was the first African-American to be elected to the Illinois Senate and served as the state's Attorney General. In 2009, he was appointed to the United States Senate by Governor Rod Blagojevich to replace President-elect Barack Obama. Burris served in the Senate until 2010, when he was defeated in a special election.
