The Richter magnitude scale was developed by Charles Francis Richter in 1935 as a measure of the strength of earthquakes. It was inspired by Kiyoo Wadati's paper, "On the Activity of Deep-Focus Earthquakes in the Japan Islands and Neighbourhoods," which showed that the logarithm of the amplitude of seismic waves increased in proportion to the Richter scale.
