Charles Martel was the ruler of the Frankish kingdom in the 8th century. He defended Aquitaine from an Umayyad invasion in 732, at the Battle of Tours. The battle was a decisive victory for the Franks and helped to turn the tide of the Umayyad expansion into Europe.
