Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was the first Western Emperor since the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476. He was the grandchild of Charles Martel, a Frankish military leader who defeated the Muslims at the Battle of Tours in 732. Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768 and was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III in 800.
