Vera Menchik was born in 1906. She was a British-Russian chess player who became the first Women's World Chess Champion in 1927 and held the title until her death in 1944. Menchik was a dominant force in women's chess, winning six more Women's World Chess Championships and remaining undefeated in tournament play for 17 years. She was also a strong player in men's tournaments, achieving the title of International Master.
