Christian VIII became King of Denmark in 1839. He was the son of King Frederik VI and his wife Princess Marie Sophie Frederikke. Christian VIII was a popular king and he is remembered for his support of the arts and sciences. He also played a role in the Schleswig-Holstein Question, which was a dispute over the ownership of two duchies in southern Denmark.
