J. R. R. Tolkien was a British writer, poet, philologist, and academic, best known as the author of the fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was also a professor of English language and literature at the University of Oxford from 1925 to 1959. His son Christopher Tolkien was a literary editor and writer, who edited and published many of his father's works posthumously.
