Born in Lugdunum, now Lyon, France, in 10 BC, Claudius was the first Roman emperor born outside of Italy. He was the fourth emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, reigning from 41 to 54 AD. Despite being physically disabled and disregarded by his contemporaries, Claudius proved to be an effective and diligent ruler, expanding the Roman Empire through successful military campaigns in Britain and Mauretania.
