Bagration was mortally wounded at the Battle of Borodino on 7 September 1812. He had been commanding the Russian 2nd Army, and was leading a successful attack on the French positions when he was shot in the chest. He was taken to the rear, where he died a few hours later. His death was a major blow to the Russian army, and contributed to their eventual defeat at the battle.
