From wounds received during the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 against the Seljuk Turks led by Alp Arslan. He survived the battle, but died of complications on 4 August 1071. The battle marked a turning point in Byzantine history, as it led to the loss of much of Asia Minor and the eventual fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453.
