Godfrey refused the title of King of Jerusalem out of reverence for Christ; he instead adopted the lesser title of Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri (Defender of the Holy Sepulcher). He believed it was inappropriate for a secular ruler to hold the title of king in the city where Jesus Christ had been crowned with thorns. After his death, his brother Baldwin assumed the title of king.
