Constance Markievicz was appointed Minister for Labour in the first Dáil Éireann in 1919. She was the first woman to hold a cabinet position in an Irish government. Markievicz was a member of the Sinn Féin party and was a strong advocate for Irish independence. She was also a member of the Irish Citizen Army, which was involved in the Easter Rising of 1916.
