Magnentius was a Roman emperor who ruled from 350 to 353 AD. He was born in Gaul and rose to prominence as a military leader under the emperor Constantius II. In 350, Magnentius rebelled against Constantius II and seized power. He ruled for three years, but was eventually defeated by Constantius II at the Battle of Mursa Major in 351 and the Battle of Mons Seleucus in 353.
