In 1994, Bill Frist, a heart surgeon and political newcomer, defeated incumbent Senator Fred Thompson in the Republican primary in Tennessee. Frist's campaign focused on fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, and tort reform. He went on to win the general election and served in the Senate until 2007.
