George Washington Bridges was born on October 9, 1825 in Newport, Rhode Island. He was a civil engineer who designed and built many bridges in the United States, including the first suspension bridge over the Mississippi River. Bridges was also a professor of engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He died on May 23, 1889 in Troy.
