How was Carnegie's financial status during his childhood?

  • Affluent

  • Upper Middle Class

  • Average

  • Poverty

Answer

Although Andrew Carnegie's family was wealthy at one point, they experienced poverty when Andrew was young. His father, William Carnegie, had invested in a cotton mill in Dunfermline, Scotland. However, the mill failed during the Panic of 1837, and the family was forced to move to Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. There, Andrew worked in a variety of jobs to help support his family.
