Before becoming pope, Poppo de' Curagnoni served as the Bishop of Brixen. He was elected to the papacy in 1119 and took the name Celestine II. He was a member of the Benedictine Order and was known for his piety and humility. His papacy was relatively short, as he died in 1124.
