Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit moved to the Dutch Republic at the age of 15, and he continued to live there for the rest of his life. He was born in Danzig, which was part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth at the time, but his parents died when he was young, and he was sent to live with his uncle in Amsterdam.
