Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was a German physicist and instrument maker. He was born in Danzig, which was then part of the Kingdom of Prussia and is now in Poland. His family were German Lutherans. Fahrenheit is best known for his work on temperature measurement, and he invented the first mercury thermometer in 1714. He also developed the Fahrenheit scale, which is still used in some countries today.
