Dawda Jawara was a Gambian politician who served as the first President of The Gambia from 1970 to 1994. He was a member of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), which he co-founded in 1959. Jawara was elected to the Legislative Council in 1960 and served as the Prime Minister of the Gambia from 1962 to 1970. He became the country's first President after independence from the United Kingdom in 1965.
