Yahya Jammeh succeeded Dawda Jawara as the President of Gambia after a 1994 military coup. He ruled the country for 22 years, during which time he was accused of human rights abuses and corruption. In 2016, he was defeated in a presidential election by Adama Barrow, who was sworn in as president in January 2017.
