In addition to being a sportscaster, Rafer Johnson also ventured into public service. He served as the chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was also the director of the Special Olympics from 1968 to 1993. Johnson has also been involved in numerous other civic and charitable organizations.
