George Grosz was born Georg Ehrenfried Groß in Berlin in 1893. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and Berlin. His work was often satirical and critical of the German government and society. He was a member of the Dada movement and later the Neue Sachlichkeit movement. He emigrated to the United States in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution. He died in New York City in 1959.
