Marie-Cessette Dumas was the African grandmother of Alexandre Dumas, the renowned French author. She was a slave from Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) who was brought to France by her master, the Marquis de la Pailleterie. Marie-Cessette's son, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, became a general in the French army and the father of Alexandre Dumas.
