Guido Westerwelle served in the Bundestag for 17 years, from 1996 to 2013. He was a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and served as the party's leader from 2002 to 2011. In 2009, he was elected Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel. He resigned from these positions in 2011 after being diagnosed with cancer. Westerwelle died in 2016.
