Guido Westerwelle served as the first openly gay person in the positions of Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Germany. He was elected to the Bundestag in 2002 and served as the leader of the Free Democratic Party from 2009 to 2011. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister in 2011 and served in these positions until 2013. He is the first openly gay person to hold either of these positions.
