The Free Democratic Party is a German political party which advocates liberal policies. The party was founded in 1948 and has been in government several times, most recently in a coalition with the Christian Democratic Union from 2009 to 2013. The party's leader, Guido Westerwelle, was Foreign Minister in the coalition government.
