Guido Westerwelle stepped down as leader of the FDP on 20 November 2011. He had been leader of the party since 2009. His resignation was prompted by poor results in the 2011 federal election. Westerwelle had been criticised for his handling of the election campaign and for his unpopularity with voters. He was succeeded as leader of the FDP by Philipp Rösler.
