Under the Defence of India Rules (DIR), Mahatma Gandhi was arrested in August 1942. He had launched the Quit India Movement, a civil disobedience campaign demanding an end to British rule. The British authorities saw this as a threat to their wartime security and responded with mass arrests and repression of the movement.
