Richard Leakey was born in 1944. He was a Kenyan archaeologist and paleoanthropologist who discovered many important fossils, including the remains of Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Australopithecus afarensis. He also led many excavations in East Africa, including the famous Olduvai Gorge. Leakey was a controversial figure, but he is widely regarded as one of the most important archaeologists of the 20th century.
