Richard Leakey held the position of Chairman of Turkana Basin Institute before his death. He was a paleoanthropologist and archaeologist who made significant contributions to the understanding of human evolution. He discovered the first fossil remains of Homo habilis and Homo erectus, and also led the excavation of the Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important sites for the study of human evolution.
